The Land
Splendora, Texas
The Piney Forests of Splendora, TX have been the home and studio space for Surls and Locke for five decades. Together, they lived and worked within the community of Splendora and the greater Houston area, where they raised their seven daughters and built a legacy.
Over years of stewardship of the property, the family has experienced a connection with nature that can revive the soul, and has witnessed that the mixture of art and nature is a powerful agent for insight and growth. The family wishes to share this powerful experience with viewers and makers of art in all forms: visual and performing arts, music, poetry, and conceptual.
Grounds
20 acres of beautifully wooded land from the north side of Surls and Locke’s studio and family acreage in Splendora, Texas will be gifted to the museum by Surls and Locke.
The lush, forested land is currently where the A Gift from the Bower exhibition is located, a half mile nature trail and sculpture garden featuring new sculptural work created by multiple generations of artists.
Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature
The Surls + Locke Museum will be adjacent to a family owned project called the Locke Surls Center for Art and Nature (LSCAN) which makes use of a former studio space converted to an artist residency program and gallery. Among many other amenities the expansive family land has to offer, this facility will be a partnership that will enrich the programmatic activities of the Surls + Locke Museum.
